Why Choose An Organic and Natural Lifestyle? Why organic and natural? Kristen and I like to ask why not? Why not protect your baby from pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, growth hormones, genetically altered organisms, additives and irradiation? We can’t quite figure it out.
Conventional cotton crops and the farms that grow them utilize over 25% of the pesticides produced in the U.S. and abroad—over 150 million pounds of fertilizer and pesticides each year! Not only do those pesticides and fertilizers compromise the integrity of the fibers we clothe our children in, they also destroy eco-systems with the vast watershed and run-off waste that is so often a byproduct of these farming methods. Plain and simple, organically grown cotton is superior to conventionally grown cotton. Conventionally grown cotton is treated with over fifteen different pesticides and herbicides—all components of the many fertilizers designed to grow cotton larger, faster, whiter and in higher quantities. After the harvest, conventional cotton is then treated with bleach and sprayed with formaldehyde. These processes can have dangerous consequences for our bodies, our reproductive systems, our internal organs—and for our children. During a child’s early stages of development, their bodies are like sponges; their delicate lungs and skin are all too willing to absorb the pollutants and free-radicals that can be found in the fibers of clothing, bedding, towels and toys. This is why Kristen and I choose only organic cotton for our new little family. When we dress our little bee in organic clothing, we significantly decrease the chances of their exposure to harmful toxins. Our child will have a decreased chance of inhaling toxic cotton particles and will avoid the risk of absorbing harsh, irritating, and even harmful toxins through their skin. Organic cotton clothing and organic toys and baby products give Kristen and me the peace of mind that comes with our confidence that we are doing everything we can to give our teeny bee a healthy, happy beginning. —Paul and Kristen |
